About Shi Yi---Professor Cheng Chung Liao
Professor Shi Yi has already mastered the language of woodcarving, with his sophisticated carving technique and his sensitivity to the color of white, black and grey, as well to the dot, line and surface, and he handles them with deceptive smoothness and simplicity. His works unite many elements: the frame of object, spacing and gathering, its dainty rhythm and its flowing outsides are just going beyond the nature. The color he uses is so artless, it seems that the color of nature has been absorbed by something, but it does exist and can not be seen. "I'd love to manifest the beauty and charm in ordinary things, and all those which remain as they are even under the attack of modern civilization, and those which have vanished or are about to vanish in the long river of history." In 1996 Professor Shi Yi was awarded the Gold Award of China for prints.
