About Zhang Minjie---by Professor Cheng Chung Liao
Zhang Minjie is a vivid character on the stage of international printmaking. His xylograph, "A running Crowd No. 2," got the Grand Prize out of over 7,000 top-ranking print artists at the 5th Osaka International Triennale 1994 Print, Japan, which shook up the whole world of prints. There are so many people in his works who are driven by the explicit power and becoming a stream of attack, which means some level of violence. Although they are just pieces on the artist's chessboard, their appearance of northern farmers maintains the flavor with which the artist wants to express his human feelings. The personality of his works is hidden and profound, especially expressed by the format and frame of modern art as well as the language criterion, combining the impression and shape of consciousness with other humanistic contents, making it more concrete. His works have had a very deep influence over the recent history of Chinese prints and his role in China prints can never be placed by others.
