Artist Statement
The patterns in nature and the relation of color to these patterns are fascinating to explore. A sort of geometry or set of relationships exists among these variables that is challenging to capture and express. The variety seems endless. I seek to release the beauty of these patterns through digital imaging.

Background
My interest in photography began as a child, when I helped with the developing, enlarging, and tinting processes in my father's darkroom. After discovering the world of digital imaging, I have shown my work in group and solo exhibitions in Hawai'i and on the Mainland. My work has been selected for private collections in the United States, Australia, Canada, Asia, Europe, and South America. My current work is captured with a digital camera or scanner, refined in Photoshop, and printed with pigment-based inks on archival watercolor papers or canvas.

Related activities include undergraduate coursework in art history at DePauw University and at the University of Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany. I have studied ceramics in Hawai'i under Mary Ellen Hancock. Work in video production, as senior producer/writer at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, yielded a 13-hour PBS television series on aging that garnered six national awards for excellence. All of these experiences have nourished my love for the visual arts.

Review
Marcia Morse, Honolulu Weekly, July 4 - 10, 2001

"Joan Pabst Dubanoski offers strong work in digital photography, including two
portrait-like studies of local flora ("Passion Flower: and "Blue Banana") and a more
abstract and constructed study of " Phantoms of the Metro."
