Biography Audrey Feltham received her B.F.A. from Sir Wilfred Grenfell
College, Memorial University in 1992. Since that time she has immersed herself
in the printmaking medium and has taught at both the secondary and the post-secondary
level. She has exhibited in Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Ontario, Alberta and
British Columbia. The
artist's work is concerned with how text and visual iconography combine to enrich
and change the perception of the visual message. Reading of the images is not
intended to be linear; the work is often layered with the intention of creating
conceit or visual metaphor. The artist's prints are indebted both to the Dutch
Emblematic prints of the Northern Renaissance and the post-modern work of pop
artists. Thematically the choice of text anticipates an understanding of social
constructs within a certain time frame, which when juxtaposed with iconography
of the matriarchy and of mass media, creates an uneasy assemblage of perceived
societal attitudes towards females. In
terms of process, the artist has moved from using entirely intaglio in her earlier
prints, to the exploration of multi-media printing. In addition, the printing
surface is often deliberately manipulated to support the conceptual/thematic content.
The rag paper or textile becomes a tool to explore texture, color and design on
a preliminary level before actually printing on the ground. The artist cuts and
sews the papers or textiles into abstracted blocks, which present a rich preliminary
layer for the subsequent layers which are printed from blocks of relief, intaglio
or lithography. The incorporation of the texture and color is crucial to the presentation
of the prints as sensual and sensuous visual explorations of the female. Curriculum
