World Printmakers Submission Procedures
Simple Technical Questions

Sending the Text

We work with PC's, not Macs. We need to receive the text files in MS Word or .txt format, as email attachments. The text we need is: The data to accompany all of the images, (see: http://www.worldprintmakers.com/english/certauth.htm), your CV/Biographical material, your Artist's Statement, along with any notes you may like to include on your technique.

If you fear Mac/PC incompatibilities, a good alternate plan is to incorporate your text into the body of an e-mail. That way it is a simple matter for us to cut and copy it when it arrives here, regardless of whether it originates in a Mac or a PC.

Sending the Images

You are responsible for the quality of the images published on World Printmakers. We will give you guidelines as to what is required, you should prepare your images according to these guidelines, and we will insert the images in your section without manipulating them. This will assure you maximum control over the appearance of your prints.

We need to receive your images in .jpg format. There are several ways to achieve this. The neatest one is to photograph your prints with a digital camera, open the images in Photoshop (or your favorite photo treatment program), adjust them, crop them, size them to 600 pixels on the longest side, convert them to .jpg, save them with old-fashioned MS-DOS 8-letter names (plus the .jpg suffix) and send them as e-mail attachments. Please assure that no capital letters are used in this process. We have encountered many annoying problems due to image files named with capital letters. (The problem is that UNIX/LINUX servers will not distinguish capital letters, even though Dream Weaver, Front Page and Windows will.) Please send the larger images two or three at a time, so as not to choke our e-mail server.

The following image file names will work fine on World Printmakers and are admissible: myphoto1.jpg, 1234.jpg, redcat.jpg, landscap.jpg, etc. The following image file names will not function on World Printmakers and are inadmissible: myphoto10.jpg, landscape.jpg, (more than 8 letters) MYPHOTO1.jpg, MYPHOTO1, JPG, myphoto1.JPG, MyPhoto1.jpg (include capital letters), myphoto1.jpeg (the abbreviation ".jpg" works better), etc. Also, please do not bother to compress the image files with WINZIP or other compression program, as the .jpg format is already compressed.

We need two images of each print, a thumbnail and an enlargement. The procedure is to create the larger image, then reduce it in size to create the thumbnail. The size of the enlargement is 600 pixels on the longest side, that is to say, 600 pixels high if it's a vertical image, or 600 pixels wide if it's horizontal. Sometimes, when a horizontal image is very long and narrow, we will go to 800 pixels in length so as it's more legible. The thumbnails should be 180 pixels on the longest side. Since the thumbnails are smaller file sizes, they can all be sent in one or two emails. Be sure to give the big images and the thumbnails slightly different names or they will annul one another when we copy them into a folder.

Mac/PC Compatibility

If you work with a Mac, you should be aware that we work with PC's, and compatibility issues can arise. To avoid the possibility of incompatibilities, when you save your images to .jpg format, in "Save As…" please select IBM-PC format. One of our artists also said that you have to physically type in the ".jpg" suffix, as some image treatment programs will not do that automatically. By being aware of this necessity to be compatible with PC, we can obviate a lot of work for everybody.

If you have doubt about compatibility issues, please send a single .jpg image as a test. We will reply immediately to tell you if we have been able to open the file or not.
