La Calcografía Nacional

Paco Aguilar

"La Calcografía Nacional" is Spain's national archive of engravings and etchings, both ancient and contemporary, and forms an autonomous department of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. The name itself ("calco" from the Greek "khalkós," "copper") evokes Spain's rich tradition of copper-plate printing.

The official presence of La Calcografía Nacional in the Web (www.calcografianacional.com) is limited to a single multimedia presentation of Goya's "Caprichos." But what a presentation! With a choice of classical guitar accompaniment, the show includes an extensive chronology of the life and times of Goya, as well as a careful presentation of all the prints in both small and enlarged formats. It is a formidable multi-media experience which deserves viewing with an appreciative friend. Dim the lights, it's worth it.
