Printmaking in the Movies
The last month here at World Printmakers was largely dedicated to cinema. Maureen Booth had the opportunity to feature as principal actress in a young director's short film about an expatriate English printmaker lady who revolutionizes a Spanish village by getting involved with a local fisherman. The film, called “¡Bive!”, besides being an account of the clash between two radically different cultures, is a tribute both to printmaking and to sexy grandmothers. You can read a personal account of its making in this month’s update of the World Printmakers site.

The lessedra Miniprint Annual
Also new this month is a virtual exhibit of the Second lessedra Miniprint Annual, from Sofia, Bulgaria. We’re delighted to have up-to-date printmaking news from Bulgaria, as there is so much talent and so much going on in printmaking there and in other parts of Eastern Europe that we know almost nothing about. So, best of luck to the lessedra Gallery and their admirable international miniprint initiative.

Make Art, Not War!
I’m happy to announce that print sales are bouncing back after the downturn brought about by the Irak war and the SARS virus. (I’m always amazed at how quickly international economic crises trickle, nay flood, down to the last small business on the block!) Let’s hope that progress is made towards world peace so as people can think about more about fine-art prints and less about war. Is that too much to ask?

The Printmakers’ Printmaker
World Printmakers artist Shi Yi is selling his work well with us. But when we analyze the clientele for his prints, it turns out that most of the buyers are printmakers themselves. Another order for a couple of Shi Yi woodcuts came in a couple days ago, this one from Belgium, and it occurred to me to ask the client if he were a printmaker himself. Yes, he said, he was a woodcut artist, and asked if I had a crystal ball. I have no crystal ball, but what is crystal clear is that Shi Yi is experiencing a unique tribute from his colleagues. Our sincere congratulations to this fine Chinese artist, the printmakers’ printmaker.

One of Shy Yi's most popular prints.

Have a Good Summer!
Summer has hit here with a vengeance, reminding me that we need to get to work on the design for this year's promotional mailings for fine-print Christmas gifts. But there will also be time for swimming in the reservoir, mountain walks, printmaking courses and attending wandering printmakers who are passing through Granada. We wish you a rewarding and productive summer, too.

Oh, before I forget, Bob Schwartz wouldn't forgive me if I didn't remind you that fine-art prints from World Printmakers make wonderful wedding gifts!

Count your blessings and, ¡Viva el grabado!
