ESTAMPA
Month November in Europe
is Estampa month, when printmakers, galleries,
media and collectors from all over the world converge on Madrid for the annual
print fair. This is the second year that World Printmakers/Spanish Printmakers
has a stand in the event and we're looking forward to it. For print lovers there's
something magic about about concentrating all that rich and diverse print lore
under a single roof where we can overdose on it for five straight days. Our
stand this year features three distinguished women printmakers, two digital and
one traditional, two from this side of the Atlantic and one from the U.S.A. Curious
to know who they are and what kind of work they're presenting? Have
a look! Point & Marge After
looking at printmaking workshops in Paris, Edinburgh, Chicago, Alicante over the
past couple of years, we return to Paris this month to pay a visit to Jorge de
Sousa´s Point & Marge Studio,
which has recently joined forces with IDL Graphique, the oldest working lithography
printers in Paris. Jorge has been a lithography artist, technician and editor
for nearly three decades. We found his comments on new technologies in printmaking
very interesting.
Invited
to Form Part of DAPTTF I received an email earlier this month from
Harald Johnson which said, "We're forming a group to tackle some of the issues
being discussed on digital-fineart and elsewhere in the printmaking world. It's
called the 'Digital Art Practices & Terminology Task Force' (DAPTTF), and
we'd like you to join us." Other members include Dot Krause, Mel Strawn,
Ileana Frometa, Ray Work and Mark Gottsegen. I'm honored to have been selected
to form part of this new digital standards group and, though I'm not an expert
on the subject, will try to contribute something positive. Telling
Secrets (and Learning from Them) The Digital Printing and Imaging
Resource site (www.dpandi.com), another arm
of Johnson's growing digital conglomerate, is currently running an update of an
article I wrote for World Printmakers a few months ago entitled
"Secrets of Fine-Art
Print Sales." After rereading it, I decided to take my own advice and
improve World Printmakers' "route to the 'Order' button"
to make it shorter and clearer for prospective print buyers. The result is the
new "To Purchase Prints" page, a straight
link from the "Prints and Printmakers" menu on the homepage. I hope
this innovation will streamline the print purchasing process to the benefit of
both artists and collectors. Welcome Back
Guido! We received a phone call from Elena from the Luna
Art Gallery in San Sebastian de la Gomera in the Canary Islands the other
day. In response to the question, "What have you been up to lately?"
Elena replied, "Guido had a heart transplant." You will be happy to
learn that Elena's husband, German printmaker Guido
Kolitscher, is back home from hospital in Madrid and well on the road to recovery.
Welcome back, Guido! We're anxious to see your next series of prints. See
you next month. In the meantime, count your blessings and, ¡Viva el grabado!
