Some
Support from Art on Paper
The new World Printmakers March cover story is about print fraud again. It's not
that we want to dwell on the negative side of life. But this is a serious issue
which affects artists and collectors gravely and directly and we don't want to
be suspected of trying to sweep it under the rug. Let nobody doubt where we stand
on the print-fraud issue: We're ag'in it! And we're doing all we can to combat
it. We're not alone. Take a look at this month's issue of Art on Paper,
pages 26-27 where they not only question the validity of the creation of reprographic
reproductions of previous work to sell on Internet, but they have seen fit to
publish World Printmaker's protest in the form of a long letter to the editor.
Before
leaving Art on Paper, please note the World Printmakers blurb in the Art
References section on page 116. This listing will be in the magazine in every
issue this year. (Art on Paper, The International Magazine of Prints, Drawing
and Photography, is one of our advertisers. Their website is at: http://www.artonpaper.com.)
New
Featured Artist Martha Jane Bradford is our new featured artist
on World Printmakers, and deserves a lookin, not only for her beautiful images,
but for her curious technique. She seems to have succeeded in converting the computer
from a "labor-saving device" into a machine akin to the Chinese water torture.
Different strokes for different folks…
Which reminds me of a story I love. Immediately after being introduced to José
Ortega y Gasset, the Spanish bullfighter Joselito el Gallo turned to his companion
and asked, "What does that guy do." Informed that Ortega was a philosopher, Joselito
replied, "Jeeze, some guys will do anything!" ("¡Hay gente para todo!") Virtual
Screenprinting Course, Chapter 5 Chapter 5 of Andy MacDougall's
Virtual Screenprinting Course is now online. Anyone who reads this chapter should
immediately notice the extent to which art needs industry. Andy's exposition on
screenprint inks is a tour de force on the subject, and is a reminder that the
vast majority of fine-art screen printers have a great deal to learn from the
pros who print posters and T-shirts. Another thing I like about Andy is that he's
the next-door neighbor of Nanook of the North! Remember
the Sponsorship Deal? You are probably asking yourself whatever
happened to World Printmakers' sponsorship deal with the mobile telephony firm.
Well, it's still on, but moving forward ever so slowly. The Spanish say, "Las
cosas de palacio van despacio…" ("Things at the palace move slowly…") Meanwhile,
another pretender has showed up on the other side of the
Atlantic. We shall see. Print
Fair in South Cumbria
We received an announcement last week which we want to share with all of
you. It's PRINTFEST, the first-ever British print fair at Coronation Hall in Ulverston,
South Cumbria in the U.K. at the end of April. We love this grass-roots print
stuff and we're going to do our best to be there. You can, too. (Why do most people
take their holidays on bleak sand beaches under a merciless carcinogenic sun when
they should be doing something they love? I've been telling my brother in law
for years that he should take his holidays at the Porsche plant in Stuttgart!)
You can find the details of the Ulverston Printfest on the World
Printmakers Forum. Guide to Print Workshops
2001 Those of you who have print workshops will be interested
in a free service offered by Art on Paper Magazine. It's their "Guide to Print
Workshops 2001." The man to contact is Ryan Peters at 1 212 988 5959 x21. Or email
him: ryan@artonpaper.com . We know it
works. We sent him the information on Maureen's workshop (http://www.maureenbooth.moebius.es)
and she now appears in a nice listing on page 119 (the only International listing
so far…) Good stuff, and the price is right! Cheers
till next time, Mike
