Andy MacDougall's Essential New Book
We like screen prints when they're
artfully done. We also like Andy MacDougall's creativity, good
humor and straight talk. So we were anxious to delve into his
new book, Screen Printing Today, the
Basics. What we like most about the book, aside
from it's crystal clear, step-by-step approach to the technical
questions, is how Andy manages to make it so relevant and so contemporary.
Screen
print is central to our lives, it turns out, not only in mundane
questions ("
think CDs, posters, stickers, t-shirts,
snowboards, skateboards, and almost every electronic gadget and
appliance in existence...") but also in terms of education,
artistic expression, the sheer joy of living. You doubt it? Have
a look at our interview with Andy. He'll make you a squeegee
believer.
John
Phillips' Inside Look at the londonprintstudio
We've been in touch with John Phillips via email for years, always
making plans to visit the londonprintstudio,
a visit we hope will materialize soon. John was a key figure in
its creation and growth to today's impressive size, artistic level
and dedication to public service. Then, a couple of months he
wrote to ask if we might be interested in seeing his doctoral
thesis, "Transforming Print: An Exposition of Key Issues
Affecting the Development of londonprintstudio,"
in which he has distilled much of what he learned over 35 years
of creating, running and growing a public facility for printmakers
and ultimately, after four changes of location, seeing it move
into a new multi-million-pound building on Harrow Road in West
London.
Yes,
we certainly would. We think that most of our readers, whether
artists or art lovers, would be interested in the subject. We
also feel that a few of them --those who are launching or growing
print studios-- would find it absolutely essential reading. This
article has a bonus feature thanks to John's unusual generosity.
He has offered to send the complete text and illustrations of
the thesis on a CD to anyone who asks for it. The information
is free, and it will only cost you $5 postage to have it sent
to you anywhere in the world. Click
here for a revealing summary of the contents of John's thesis.
Anne
Desmet, Printmaker and Editor
Anne Desmet is a British printmaker, mother of two young children,
and editor of Printmaking
Today. We're using her show, which is just closing at
London's Hart Gallery, as a pretext to interview this active and
interesting woman who, when she goes to the office, feels as if
she's on a holiday. We think you'll be fascinated by her well-informed
views on printmaking and other subjects. Have a look our interview
entitled, Which Anne Are You Today?
Changes
at World Printmakers
Many of you received a letter from me last week announcing major
changes in the way World Printmakers
works. In short, we've decided to turn the sales activities over
to the artists and concentrate on editorial and support services.
For those of you who didn't receive the letter, you
can access it here.
See
you next time. Till then, when in doubt, keep on printing!
