Artist's
Statement
I am a Turkish printmaker living on the coast of the Aegean Sea. My art
deals with the sensitivity introduced through the image of the female
body juxtaposed against the aloof mechanical lifestyle we live in the
21st century. I associate digitally-manipulated photographic images with
traditional printmaking techniques. This leads me to convey a unique visual
language on the surface of the paper.
I
usually work on one woodblock to attain a colored print. I use a subtractive
system of carving. I use the organic grains of the woodblock to associate
the natural with the digital. In my pictures with a single woman figure
I try to avoid storytelling. I rather use the formal elements of art to
express my ideas like color, space and form. I try to bury intense eroticism
and emotional atmosphere in a mechanical division of space. I almost hide
the female figure for the viewer to discover. In my imagery there are
twelve to seventeen color layers. I let the ink dry at least for 24 hours.
I complete a print in approximately five weeks. To increase my creativity
and productivity I usually work on five different pieces at the same time.
